Chances in CT-integrated / Gen Surg position

Postby BRAZILIAN MS » Sat Oct 24, 2009 3:55 pm

Hi AnatolyK!

I wonder if you can give me your opinion about my case: I wanna get a new 6y Cardiothoracic-Integrated residency program! I´m a 5th year medical student (its like to be 3rd y in a US med school), I pass on USMLE step 1 (81) on 1st attempt and waiting for step 2 Ck score. I´ll do step 2 CS next year, during a 3 month (july-august-sep) US clinical experience in CT surgery and Gen Surgery AT THE HOSPITAL which is my first choice of position. I also went to Texas Heart Institute as a med student last winter where I´ve got a LOR. I don´t have many publications...
I´m thinking to apply to prelim surg position also, in case I couldnt get a CT-integrated position.

Positive factors:
- 4 months of US clinical experience in CT surgery / Gen Surgery
- LOR from US surgeons
- I´ll apply to residency just after graduation (no gaps)
- 3 months of USCE with surgeons who coordinate the program of my first choice, in the period of application.

Negative factors:
- I´m an IMG
- 81 on step 1 (on holding step 2 ck score)
- No important publication

So, HOW ARE MY CHANCES OF GETTING A CARDIOTHORACIC-INTEGRATED POSITION?????

I do not think there are many cardiothorasic programs out there. Just because of that your chances are very slim.

How much will my chances increase if I do a preliminary year of Gen. Surgery 1st??? Plus, do you think I can get a Gen Surg preliminary position with my scores?

Your scores are good (would hae been better if both steps were above 85).
Suregery by itself is very competitive. CT is a very far shot. I don't want to discourage you though. Your best chance of getting what you want would be via getting to know right people. Or actually the opposite - making right people getting to know you. Prelim position at the same hospital, research, publications in the field of their interest, whatever can grab their attention.
